When I started my own job search for sales executive jobs I enrolled with TheLadders.com. If you’re not familiar with TheLadders.com they only post jobs that have “at plan” compensation over $100,000.

It’s not that I am against jobs. I’ve had lots of them. Here’s a list and lessons learned…
Mowing Lawns - In Montgomery Alabama with severe grass allergies. Primary goal was to keep gas in the Red VW Bug that cost $5 to fill up. I still think the cost of a tank of gas is a pretty good measure to determine the market rate for mowing grass.
Boy Scout Camp Counselor - It was a fun few weeks away from my parents. Learned, get your paper work done the night before the campers leave. Made the mistake of drinking my first beer and falling asleep before the work was done. Oops!
Wendy’s Hamburgers - Hot hard work with greasy food. Learned there is always something more to do. If it’s not busy, go wipe down tables, mop the floor, etc.
Dish Washer/Bus Boy - At what was then a nice restaurant in Montgomery. Another hot job, with hard work. Learned restaurant people are fun to work with and stiffing a waitress is a rotten thing to do. Bussed tables in my sleep.
Mens Store Clerk - Easy mostly boring work. Not sure I learned anything here.
Summer Construction Laborer - First day on the job was spent cutting a miss poured foundation. My job was to fill up a dump truck then empty it. Learned the value of an education and skills. Benefits was getting is good shape had a nice tan too.
Co-op Student at Electric Utility - Great pay, interesting work, nice people. Learned I was more interested in working with software than engineering (my major).
Engineer at Electric Utility - More interesting work, paid well. Learned I needed an work environment that wasn’t full of policies, procedures and methodologies. It was a great place to get experience but stayed too long.
Software Sales at Growing Software Company - Loved this job, especially when the company was young and growing. Learned what a gift is to work with smart motivated people and innovative products. Learned solution selling and loved being paid for results.
Sales Marketing Services - Interesting company trying to find direction; I was too. Learned to check their references before taking a job with an unknown company. It wasn’t a good fit for them, or me.
